The Roots are one of the most prolific rap groups out there, and they’re bringing you a one of a kind performance, full of catchy hooks and heart. The lineup is insane. It’s full of industry heavyweights like lead MC Black Thought, drummer and joint frontman Questlove, as well as guitar royalty "Captain" Kirk Douglas. Current members also include: Kamal Gray, Tuba Gooding, Jr., James Poyser, Ray Angry, Mark Kelley, Ian Hendrickson-Smith, Dave Guy, Stro Elliot, and Jeremy Ellis. Now, that’s one killer lineup!!

The Philadelphia hip-hop based band is one of the most progressive acts in the contemporary music scene. From their 1993 debut ‘Organix’ which scored them a cult following in Europe right through to their conceptual 2010s releases, they are always switching things up with a number of instrumentalists. Jeremy Ellis lends his talent as finger drummer, while Tuba Gooding, Jr. plays the sousaphone to perfection. During their epic career, The Roots have gone platinum and gold with successive studio releases and even snagged a heap of Grammy Awards. Their genre-bending tunes got them a nightly nationwide audience as the house band on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The journey began for The Roots in 1987, when the founders rapper Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) and drummer ?uestlove (Ahmir Khalib Thompson) became buddies at high school. Playing their own brand of hip-hop around school, on the sidewalk, and at talent shows, the duo began to fill their pockets and soon grew their team, catalog of awesome gigs, and fan base. The journey is far from over for The Roots. This talented lineup is bringing you all their sweetest tunes to The Pavilion at Ravinia.
